Thursday night at their regular board meeting the board of commissioners of the Park District of Oak Park approved spending $239,495 on improvements to Austin Gardens. The work was re-bid in August after initial bids came back significantly over budget.
The work, which will begin Oct. 1, is part of planned Phase Three improvements under the park's comprehensive master plan. The plan includes $113,840 for electrical work that park district staff say will greatly improve convenience and safety for both park users and for Oak Park Festival Theatre, which utilizes the park each summer. That work will be done by Accord Electric.
Fence Connection, Inc. will be paid $66,997 for fencing work in and around the park, including a wood fence on the south side, "Montage" gates along the west side by neighboring condos, and barrier fencing by the northeast corner entrance.
Muellermist Irrigation Company will install an irrigation system for the wild flower garden, including a new pump, controller and electrical system, costing $43,470.
The park's path system will be upgraded at a cost of $15,158 by J. Andersen Construction Company, including a gravel path connection on the north end of the park. Two concrete pads for bike racks will be constructed, as well pads for numerous outdoor benches.
