The comeback kids did it again.

A week after rallying from 16 points down to edge Simeon, the Oak Park and River Forest High School football team defeated visiting Downers Grove South in similar fashion.

Trailing the Mustangs 17-7 in the fourth quarter, OPRF scored a pair of touchdowns to pull out a 21-17 win.

Quarterback Brian May (20-for-32, 193 yards, TD, 3 INT) sparked the rally with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Keith Robinson to whittle the Huskies' deficit to 17-14 at 7:23 of the fourth quarter. Robinson also ran well out of the backfield with four carries for 57 yards.

On Downers Grove South's ensuing possession, the Huskies blocked a punt to set the stage for their game-winning score. May threw a 20-yard pass to Craig Shelton and senior running back Terrance Roundy capped off the scoring drive on a 1-yard run into the end zone to put OPRF up for good at 21-17. Henry Darrow kicked the extra point for OPRF.

The Mustangs moved the ball reasonably well in the closing minutes; however OPRF defenders Kevin Gilbert and Izaiah Ruffin recorded sacks to quell any chance of a Downers South West Suburban Conference crossover win. Ruffin led OPRF with 7.5 tackles, inlcuding 1.5 sacks and 3 tackles for loss.

After a scoreless first quarter, OPRF took an early lead when Roundy scored on a 2-yard TD run with 9:30 left in the second quarter.

Downers South quarterback George Ross (13-for-24, 133 yards) tossed two TD passes to Vinny Provenzano (49 yards) and Jaden Rome (13 yards) to give the Mustangs a 14-7 halftime lead. Downers South kicker Jacob Holous tacked on a 37-yard field goal with 11:50 remaining in the fourth quarter to extend its lead to 17-7.

The Huskies answered the Mustangs run of 17 unanswered points with a 14-point spurt of their own during the final eight minutes to earn a hard-fought win.

OPRF (2-0) hosts Hinsdale Central (1-1) on Friday, Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m.

Hinsdale Central has plenty of playmakers on offense, including Indiana-bound tight end Matt Bjorson, running back Luke Skokna, wide receiver Garrett Oakey and quarterback Matt Rush.

The May-led Huskies will counter with an attack featuring the strong running of Roundy and playmaking ability of wide receivers Trevon Brown (12 catches, 106 yards against Downers South), Fred Brandstrader and Shelton.

On defense, Davin Colvin, Jonathan Mitchell, Cedric Cheatham, Machi Young, Ashford Hollis, Gilbert and Ruffin have led OPRF.

The Huskies will be looking for a measure of revenge as the defending conference Red Devils defeated OPRF 21-12 in last year's regular season finale to claim the title. The Huskies, Glenbard West and Lyons Township each earned a share of second place in 2016.
