Why won't the NRA do its part for safety?

Thank you for you commentary in the Aug. 1 Viewpoints [Maximum freedom, minimal responsibility, Ken Trainor]. It was a cogent and logical argument that puts the onus on the NRA to take responsibility for its stand on firearms possession.

Why can they not do their part to keep the wrong kinds of arms out of the wrong hands? It seems that all they want is the proliferation of weapon possession and, in effect, the arming of the U.S. citizenry. This hardly appears to be protection of the rights of sport shooters.

Which sportsmen would want to bag the exploded remains of a deer that he shot with a submachine gun? Sound tasty?

You are asking an advocacy organization to be a law enforcement arm of the government. The NRA is not able to deny any individual anything. They do, in fact, speak up to defend your constitutional rights and argue for those rights in court. The group has never advocated gun violence or illegal ownership or use. The NRA has never tried to overturn gun possession laws for convicted felons or argue against court ordered prohibitions in orders of protection. You are finding a convenient scapegoat in the NRA, when, in fact they are more dedicated to ending gun violence than you are.
