Incomplete graph fails to instruct

While I am sympathetic to the cause of controlling gun violence, as a scientist I must take issue with the graph published in the recent letter in Wednesday Journal [Background checks reduce gun violence, Viewpoints, July 30]. No units are associated with the parameter "Firearm Mortality Rate" plotted on the Y-axis. This is like a sentence with a subject but no predicate. 

I note the Journal spends a lot of ink highlighting the athletic exploits of our youth. If we aren't going to highlight their academic achievements equally, at least we should model numeracy in our community's paper of record. 

We should treat numeracy as seriously as we treat literacy.
