With four recent area graduates pursuing pro baseball dreams, Wednesday Journal has been keeping readers informed of their progress each week throughout the summer. The minor league season ends on Labor Day, so there will be just two more editions. Look for a season recap in the Sept. 16 issue. Stats are through Sunday.
Justin Olson returned to the bullpen after three straight starts and pitched 1 2/3 hitless innings last week. He struck out two in the ninth inning of Double A New Britain's 7-1 win over Reading on August 24 and then stranded an inherited runner Sunday by getting two outs against Norwich. Olson is 9-8 with a 4.79 ERA and 103 strikeouts in 109 innings.
Giants prospect Mike Santoro hit his first pro home run last week, a two-run shot Saturday in San Francisco's 9-1 win over the Brewers in Arizona League rookie action. Santoro is hitting .242 with eight RBIs in 12 games.
Infielder Vasili Spanos was sent down on August 21 to Single A Stockton, where he batted .315 in 68 games earlier this season before being promoted to Double A on June 23. Spanos picked up right where he left off in June, going 5-for-16 (.313) in six games with the Ports last week. He hit .235 with 27 RBIs in 43 games with Double A Midland.
Blake Whealy went 1-for-6 with a double in St. Lucie's marathon 7-6, 14-inning win against Jupiter on August 22. Whealy's 1-for-8 (.125) week dropped him ever closer to the Mendoza line, his average falling to .201 by week's end.
