With four recent area graduates pursuing pro baseball dreams, Wednesday Journal is keeping readers informed of their progress each week until the seasons end in early September. Stats are through Sunday.
Justin Olson struck out the first four men he faced Friday in his start at Bowie, before yielding five runs and settling for a no-decision in New Britain's 8-6 loss to the BaySox. He was taken deep for a three-run homer by former Montreal Expo Peter Bergeron, the 17th homer Olson's allowed in 29 outings. With six K's in four innings, Olson is now averaging 8.39 strikeouts per nine innings pitched.
Mike Santoro had one hit in three at-bats last week, driving in a run with a triple in San Francisco's Arizona League rookie game with the Mariners on Friday. The hit raised his average with the Giants to .250 (7-for-28). Santoro has only 55 at-bats since making his pro debut with short-season Salem on June 21.
Infielder Vasili Spanos hit his 15th homer of the season August 17 in Midland's loss to Arkansas. The homer was his sixth since being promoted to Double A. Spanos' 4-for-15 (.267) week raised his average to .235.
Blake Whealy went 2-for-15 (.133) with St. Lucie last week, dropping his average to .203. He hit his 10th double of the year Thursday against Palm Beach.
