End-of-summer report

Well Ken, your "high summer" is fading into early autumn [High summer, time to find a porch, Ken Trainor, Viewpoints, July 23].

I think this summer was pleasant, especially nice after a rough winter. We had plenty of rain, a boon to Oak "Parkers" who love flowers, as most seem to. I can't remember many years with such fine flower displays.

When sauntering about town, I try to keep my gazing at ground (flower bed) level, as so many dead and dying trees can ruin the mood (Hey, Public Works/Forestry, you took my ash trees; now replace them with oaks or bald cypress)!

I still see too many empty ballfields when league play isn't happening! Maybe most exercise is of the thumb variety? We need more "pickup" games.

The drinking fountain on the northeast corner of Marion and Lake has been dry all summer! My tax dollars in action? Are you a "WJ" reader, PW Dept? The Horse Fountain in Scoville still functions nicely.

The park district did take next-day corrective action on a safety issue I reported in the Wenonah Tot Lot (tax dollars in action!).

Is it just me, or do others notice a notable lack of ice cream trucks and, of course, their music? I do see coffee trucks. Hey, Ken, let's buy ice cream cart/bikes! If we avoid too much sampling of the wares, we can make a bundle, have fun and get in shape!

Happy fall, Oak Park!
