Mary Elizabeth Sharpe (nee O'Hara), 94, of Huntley, formerly of Oak Park, Chicago and Beverly Hills, Fla., died on Aug. 5, 2011 at St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin. Born on April 3, 1917 in Baltimore, Md., to John and Grace O'Hara, the family moved to Oak Park soon after. She met her husband, Leo, in 1935 and began a romance that lasted over 60 years and included six children whose births spanned 21 years. Their legacy expanded to include 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Her children would concur that their home and family was run as a "tight ship," where teamwork was expected. Wit and humor were always part of their home, along with a positive outlook. When the children were older, Mary enjoyed working at the Maione Galleries in Oak Park where she could pursue her passion for antiques, fine arts and especially meeting new people. She was an avid reader and always an interesting conversationalist.
Mary Sharpe was the mother of Joan (Shartle), James (Camille), William (Margaret), Patrick (Susan), Kevin (Glenda) and Brian (Pauline). She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; her son, John; her sister, Margaret Wilhelm; her brother, Jack O'Hara; her grandson, Thomas Horkay; and her great-grandson, Matthew Decker.
In keeping with her generous nature, she has donated her body to science.
A memorial service will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 845 W. Main St. in West Dundee on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 10 a.m.
