This Saturday, residents won't have to go far to help provide medical care to hundreds of people in Honduras.
Greenline Wheels will host "Mission Possible," an event featuring bike-centric raffles and silent auctions. The goal is to raise $3,000 to purchase medical supplies, which will allow students from Boston College to serve over 800 patients during an upcoming trip to Honduras.
Mission Possible will take place on Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Items being raffled off include a Cutler Origin 8 bicycle, a Cannondale bicycle, Axiom messenger bags, Vigor bike helmets, and other accessories.
"During one week in Panama last summer, we cared for over 300 patients, built five latrines, and provided vital medical care that was otherwise unavailable," Freddy Gibson, event coordinator, wrote in a news release. "Without a doubt, the trip was a success and an incredible experience and that's why we are looking to do it again."
Gibson will coordinate a team of students from Boston College to venture to Honduras next summer where they will provide the same medical care they provided in Panama. All funds raised at the Mission Possible fundraiser will go toward the costs of the brigade's medical supplies.
Strings attached to Arts District
The Oak Park Suzuki School, founded in 2005 by Oak Park resident Meg Lanfear, is expanding into the 1,200-square-foot storefront on the corner of Harrison Street and Ridgeland Avenue at the end of August.
With the expansion, she will add instructors to accommodate a growing waiting list of students and changing the school's name to The Oak Park String Academy.
According to a news release, Oak Park Development Corporation worked closely with Lanfear as she solidified the vision for her growing business. OPDC helped identify available spaces, including 350 Harrison St. where the school will open. The school is moving from 510 S. Cuyler Ave.
Oak Park String Academy joins other related businesses in the Harrison Street Arts District that includes Musikgarten, Val's halla Records, Open Door Theatre, Intuit Dance, and Magical Minds Studio.
