Oak Park resident and Fenwick High School sophomore Max Showalter placed fifth at the USA Diving National Championships in Greensboro N.C.
Showalter entered the one-meter springboard finals in second place with a score of 350.95 on nine dives. In the finals, he opened the door for the competition to move ahead after a form break on his second dive of the final round.
But Showalter finished strong with a favorable score on a back 1 1/2 somersault with 1 1/2 twists.
After a long summer of qualifying meets that took Showalter to regional and competitions in Columbia, Mo., and Brown Deer, Wis., he advanced to nationals on three events. In addition to three-meter springboard, Showalter competed in the three-meter synchronized diving with his partner Joey Ciffelli of Flossmoor. Showalter will be diving for Fenwick this coming season after taking an IHSA waiver to compete in international meets in Canada in early December.
