Wednesday Journal is following former area ballplayers as they try to make it to the pros. Every week the Watch will keep readers updated on their progress. Stats are through Sunday.

Rookie Gulf Coast League Yankees pitcher Tim Dennehy extended his scoreless innings streak to 15 on Thursday with five innings of three-hit ball in a 3-2 win over the Tigers. Dennehy improved to 4-1. The former Huskie has allowed just five hits and three walks in the streak to lower his ERA from 8.64 to 3.09. Through 23 1/3 innings, he has a fine WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched) of 1.11.

Caleb Fields hit his first pro homer on July 23, a solo shot to left in the rookie GCL Pirates' 8-0 win over the Reds. Fields also was the spark Sunday as his team came back from a 7-0 hole in an 8-7 loss to the Orioles. He started the Pirates' scoring with a two-run triple in the sixth and added an RBI groundout in the eighth. Fields went 7-for-22 (.318) on the week to boost his average to .278 with 11 RBIs in 23 games.

Infielder/DH Vasili Spanos hit his 10th homer Friday, staking Double A Midland to a 1-0 lead in a 7-1 victory. Spanos added an RBI triple on July 23 and batted .350 (7-for-20) on the week. He is second on the RockHounds in homers and RBIs (48), third in doubles (21) and fourth in slugging percentage (.465, 10th in the Texas League). Spanos is hitting .286.

Derek Schlecker's defense did him in Friday as he fell to 0-2 by allowing an unearned run in 1 2/3 innings against Idaho Falls. Tied at two in the eighth inning with a man at second and two outs, Schlecker induced a ground ball to the third baseman, but a throwing error allowed the go-ahead run to score in rookie Orem's 3-2 loss. Schlecker retired the first five batters he faced before a single and wild pitch set up the winning run. His ERA is 4.91 in 11 outings.
