Damani Henard, 14, incoming OPRF freshman

Damani Eugene Henard, 14, of Oak Park, died July 3, after being shot and killed in Chicago on his bicycle while riding home. He was born April 28, 1999 in Chicago and was a true blessing to his parents.

He was a graduate of West Park Academy and was enrolled to attend Oak Park and River Forest High School in the fall. He enjoyed drawing, basketball, football, skateboarding, Yu-Gi-Oh! cards and most of all hanging out with family and friends.

Damani was the son of Yolanda Paige and W.H. He was the brother of Travis, Darius and Zapria and the uncle of Zariyah. He was the grandson of the late Barbara Paige Eurby. He was the nephew of Iviva, Keshia, Claretha and Niaeshia and Jimmy.

He will be missed by cousins Shyiem, Alliyah, Keith, Akeem, Kendrick and Kendra and special friends Shalima, Genovius, Jose, Gianni, Edgar, Deshaun, Fernando, Ronald and Davonte. Funeral services were held July 13 at Corinthian Temple Church of God in Christ, 4520 W. Washington Blvd in Chicago with Rev. Ira Acree officiating. Interment took place at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Hillside.

One has to ask, why was this child riding his bike on North Avenue at 12:45am? Last time I checked Oak Park has curfew laws. The truth is that the young man would be alive today, only if he had proper home supervision. RIP Damani
