Sanford Fonda Giles, 63, died of a heart attack Monday, June 27, 2011. He was the husband of Norma Medina; father; and brother of Carol (Bill) Parrillo. Memorial Mass was Friday, July 1, 2011 at Holy Name Cathedral.
Mr. Giles was born in Oak Park Hospital, attended St. Giles Elementary School, Fenwick High School and was graduated from Oak Park and River Forest High School, as was his father, two uncles and an aunt. He was graduated from the University of Iowa and earned a master's in history from University of New Mexico.
He served four year in Vietnam, the last year as a radio man in a U.S. Infantry unit, being promoted to staff sergeant. Then, serving as sergeant major, he administrated China Beach, the rest and rehabilitation facility for combat troops.
Returning to Oak Park, he worked for Gil-Bar Electronic Molded Products, which made the bed that Ford cars from the Chicago plant used.
The Giles family came to Oak Park in 1910 to buy 10 building lots at Jackson and Clinton and go to into business.
