OK, so we missed the fireworks at the high school on the 4th. Don't yell at us; we feel bad enough already. We had a cold, all right? Plus, sometimes we just can't stand crowds. Not even friendly, calm, Oak Park crowds.
Which is why we're staying as far away as possible from The Avenue on Friday, July 15. You know why, of course. Right: the next Harry Potter book is being released at midnight. The last time this happened, we were good Oak Park parents and took the children down for the fun. It was not fun. It was crowded and smushed. It was national news. If we wanted national news, we'd declare a moratorium on Harry Potter.
So we have another suggestion entirely. We're going to the Oak Park Arms Retirement Community, 408 S. Oak Park Ave., on Sunday, July 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. to hear the Peter Tye Quartet playing jazz and popular standards. We might even dance, if the floor's not too crowded. They told us that all ages are welcome, and it's free! Call 386-4040 if you want to ask them anything.
We haven't decided what to do for our birthday yet, which is Monday, July 18. We are seriously considering seeing the W.C. Fields movie at Oak Park Public Library at 7 p.m. Doesn't that sound like fun? The problem will be talking the family into it. They never want to do anything we want to do. But since it's our birthday, maybe we'll make them. Heh-heh-heh.
