River Forest Deputy Fire Chief Kurt Bohlmann was sworn as chief, July 10, following the retirement of current Fire Chief James Eggert after 13 years as the department's head.

As reported by Wednesday Journal, the 62-year-old Eggert will continue to work as a consultant for the department, helping with human resources and budgeting, among other duties, through December 2019. The village board approved that employment agreement, totaling $25,000, in April. The agreement is for 40 hours of in-person work per year along with unlimited phone conversations.

"I want to thank you, the village board, the wonderful residents in this community, the brave firefighters who serve this community day in and day out, the talented administrative staff, my friends and family, especially my beautiful and loving wife Christine," Eggert said, fighting back tears. "Without their support, I would not be able to accomplish these tasks. This has been an amazing journey and I am proud to have served the wonderful community of River Forest."

The village plans to eliminate the deputy chief position in its next budget, saving about $150,000.

"I'd like to congratulate Chief Eggert on his retirement," Village President Catherine Adduci said before praising Eggert's patience and deep knowledge. "He has been nothing but a wonderful chief for our village."

Eggert worked previously at the Tri-State Fire Protection District and village of Hinsdale's fire department.
