William W. "Willie" Irons Jr., 67, of Oak Park, died at home on June 29, 2014. Born in Moberly, Missouri on April 12, 1947 to William W. Sr. and Jean Irons, he was a graduate of Decatur Eisenhower High School. A veteran of the U.S. Army in Vietnam, he was member of the 5th Army Band, playing flute, piccolo and saxophones. He also played in a number of local ensembles, including the West Suburban Community Band.
He attended Columbia College, where he studied photography, and the Coyne Institute, where he learned the HVAC trade. An avid reader, modeler, machinist and photographer, he was also a lover of old-time radio shows.
Mr. Irons worked in the maintenance department at Oak Park and River Forest High School for 23 years until his retirement in 2002.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Rose "Mitzi" (nee Jamnik); his brother, James (Jonetta); his brother–in–law, Yanez Jamnik; and his nieces and nephews Jonathan (fianceé Allison Mickel) Irons, Joseph Irons, Karolena Jamnik, Justyna (Dan) Melehan and Jason (Danielle) Jamnik.
Visitation will be held this Saturday, July 5, from 9:30 a.m. until prayers 11:30 a.m. at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home, 203 S. Marion St., Oak Park, then to Ascension Church, 808 S. East Ave., Oak Park for funeral Mass at 12 p.m. Interment will be private.
