Well, well, well. We have fallen down a deep one this time. Our esteemed Speaker of the House, the Hon. Michael Madigan, has announced that the House has passed what he gleefully calls "the Doomsday Budget." These machinations do not apply to him, nor his family, nor his cronies but to seniors, the disabled, low-income families and individuals and children in need. "Doom" is the only fitting word.
As the instruments of our governing documents (our State Preamble and Constitution) are unlawfully disregarded, we prepare to live our dystopian present: human needs are unmet, education is put on the back burner, the rivers in our state song are clogged with crud, and our infrastructure prepares to collapse on us all. Our state is known world-wide as the Felonious State, while our elected officials adjust the comfort level on the air conditioning in the limousines we provide them.
As we begin another election cycle, the question before us is, in the words of Mother Jones, the great advocate of civil rights and civil reform: "How much longer will it be before we throw the bums out?"
