This development is not what's good for Oak Park

Where's the village? We moved here a year ago because Oak Park is an engaged community that pays attention to schools, to its housing stock, and to planned development. After living on the Northside of Chicago, we grew tired of going to sleep in a neighborhood and waking up in a new block of condos.

The intended development on Madison between Grove and Carpenter makes the Northside look sedate. We were recently told (by a neighbor) that the developer plans to put 75 units in a six story building at the end of our block. We live perhaps 20 houses away and have received no information from the developer. There has been no neighborhood input. I have seen no village official discussing what would suit the neighborhood.

Where, exactly, is the planning? Where will an additional 75 cars park? Where will they drive? And more important, where will the many kids who play on our very quiet street go?

Madison Street could use some development but this project looks as if it will only develop John Schiess' wallet. If the newly elected village officials would like to prove themselves, there are some upset neighbors here who would welcome help sorting out the situation. Can Oak Park create some good out of an ugly beginning?
