State Volleyball Tournament
The Oak Park and River Forest volleyball team did take home a trophy as expected after the IHSA Class AA State tournament at Hoffman Estates High School on Saturday, but it wasn't the one the team had in mind.

With star player Sean O'Malley leading the way, the Huskies (33-6) were gunning for the State title, their first in the school's history. Instead, the team was forced to settle for a third-place trophy after edging West Suburban (Silver) Conference foe Lyons Township 22-25, 25-23, 25-18.

After taking out Sandburg 25-21, 25-22 in the quarterfinals, OPRF was unable to slip past Barrington (32-2) in the semifinals, falling in three games 25-21, 23-25, 25-20. The Huskies trailed for much of Game 1 and stayed even with the Broncos in the first half of Game 2. While Barrington's defense zeroed in on O'Malley, Christopher Lewis was able to spark OPRF. Lewis's smash through two Barrington defenders put the Huskies up 12-10 at one point, a lead they would not relinquish in the game. Lewis finished with six kills on the day.

Barrington continued to give OPRF fits in Game 3, eventually pulling away with a four-point lead. The Broncos ended up losing to defending State champs Wheaton-Warrenville South in the title game.

Still reeling from the loss to Barrington, the Huskies had to rally to defeat Lyons for third place on Saturday. The UCLA-bound O'Malley closed out his high school career with a 26-kill match, bringing his record setting total for his career to 1,457?#34;he had 57 kills total in the tournament. Lawrence Collerd racked up 47 assists in the win.

Five key blocks in Game 1 of OPRF's match with Sandburg gave the Huskies momentum going into the final game. Stephen Gee had three blocks in the win, while O'Malley racked up 10 kills and Anthony LeFlore two aces.

The Huskies, who graduate five seniors, collected the program's fifth State trophy in 14 years. CONTACT: bspencer@wjinc.com
