Florence K. Hennessey, 94, of Oak Park, died on June 1, 2012. Born in Chicago to Elsie and Edward Kelly, she attended St. Xavier High School and College, and received a B.A. in music and history in 1939. In December 1939, she married John F. Hennessey, and in 1944, they moved to Oak Park.
The mother of 10 children, Mrs. Hennessey was active in the first Ascension School Parent Teacher Organization. She was a longtime volunteer for the Johanna League, translating many books into Braille for blind readers. She was also active in her parish church, St. Edmund, and was a member of the committee that helped renovate the church.
Florence Hennessey is survived by her children, Rev. John Hennessey, Anne Bodach, Rev. Lawrence Hennessey, Michael Hennessey, Jean Macula, Robert Hennessey, Mary Ocasek, and Elizabeth Hennessey; her 21 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her daughter, Carol Porter; and her son, Thomas Hennessey.
Visitation will be held at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home, 203 S. Marion St. in Oak Park, on Wednesday, June 6, from 3 to 8 p.m., and on June 7 at St. Edmund Church from 10-11 a.m., 188 S. Oak Park Ave. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Edmund at 11 a.m., June 7, followed by interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Edmund Church would be appreciated.
