You can't escape the 'scapers'

I heard them

before they turned the corner;

I was reading on the porch.

The "Scapers" had arrived;

they stopped across the street.

Out roared the mammoth mower,

the mini-mower,

and shoulder-holstered blower,

spewing noxious smells,

belching untold decibels.

My wife's lips moved, I couldn't hear

until we were inside, attempting to avoid

the vapors and the noise.

Thirty minutes later quiet had returned;

on to their next conquest,

rapidity their redemption.

Pollution blown away,

now inhaled by neighbors

who ventured out that day,

ah, no hint of herbicide

left behind, this time.

I sat down to read again

and looked across the street.

How green the grass, neat and edged

in our quiet Green Village.
