Owners in condo elevator buildings have been watching the progress of Senate Bill 886 as it wound through first, second, and third readings in the Illinois State Senate. This bill intended to exempt condos from the “Elevator Companies Welfare Act.” Unfortunately, the “exemption of condos” portion of SB 886 did not survive the senate. However, the time in which condos have to comply was extended until 2013. Therefore, SB 886 passed the senate with only the extended compliance period.
On May 21, the bill was introduced in the house. Its chief house sponsor is Rep. “Skip” Saviano. Co-sponsors are representatives Deborah Graham and Karen Yarbrough. At this time, it appears this bill has a good chance of passing. If passed and signed by the governor, condo owners would have an additional two years time to organize and work to exempt condos from these regulations. Those condo boards who wish to organize and fight this onerous law should contact me at my website, algailpopowits@earthlink.net.
