Reassignment deal nets Green $30K

District 97 will pay former Brooks Middle School Principal Flora Green an additional $30,000 over her final two years with the district in exchange for not suing the district.

The payments are part of a Reassignment Agreement and Release that will move Green to the role of assistant director of special education for low incidence programs while protecting the district from any potential legal action.

"It's not something [the board] entered into lightly," said Board President Carolyn Newberry Schwartz, adding that it did so on the advice of legal counsel.

Although state school law allows the district to reassign administrators, Newberry Schwartz said the payments "made the most sense" when considering possible litigation could cost the district more in legal fees, administrative time "and more discord."

The agreement also states that Green will report directly to the superintendent, rather than to the director of special services. Outgoing Supt. John Fagan said Green requested that part, which was agreeable to the administration. Principals report directly to the superintendent.

Low incidence programs in special education refer to more severe disabilities.
