With four recent area graduates pursuing pro baseball dreams, each week throughout the summer WEDNESDAY JOURNAL will be keeping readers informed of their progress. Stats are through Sunday.

Justin Olson allowed one run on a solo homer in two innings of relief last week. He is leading his team, Double-A New Britain of the Eastern League, in innings pitched (72 2/3), wins (six), and strikeouts (63).

Fenwick graduate and 2004 draftee Mike Santoro made his pro debut Thursday with Salem-Keizer, San Francisco's affiliate in the short-season Northwest League. Batting seventh and playing right field, Santoro went 0-for-4 but reached base on an error in the Volcanoes' loss to Tri-City.

Moving one step closer to the big leagues, Vasili Spanos was promoted to Double-A Midland of the Texas League Thursday and hit a solo homer in his debut with the RockHounds. Spanos had RBIs in each of his first three games in the new league, going 2-for-8 with a sac fly. To earn the promotion, he batted .315 with nine homers and 56 RBIs in 68 games with Single-A Stockton.

Blake Whealy homered twice and had six hits last week to raise his average to .245 for the Single-A St. Lucie Mets. Whealy had sat out seven of eight games before playing in five straight last week. He has seven homers and 20 RBIs in 54 games.
