Oak Park police have a Melrose Park couple in custody after shots were fired from one automobile at another near Oak Park Avenue and Division Street Sunday afternoon. According to Oak Park Police Chief Rick Tanksley, the altercation between the occupants of two vehicles started in Maywood, proceeded eastbound through Melrose Park and River Forest, and culminated with the firing of two shots as they approached Oak Park Avenue on Division Street in Oak Park. It was not a random act, police said.
"This is an incident between individuals known to each other," said Tanksley Monday afternoon.
Soon after the report of shots fired, Oak Park police pulled over one vehicle containing three adults and a 3-year-old child. After questioning the adult occupants of the car, police were able to locate the other vehicle. However, the individuals allegedly riding in that car were reportedly uncooperative with the ongoing investigation.
While police continue to investigate the incident, two of the adults have been charged with Aggravated Discharge of a Weapon, a charge which they are hoping to upgrade to Attempted Murder. As far as police can ascertain, no bullets struck the targeted car, so officers were canvassing the area around Division Street and Oak Park Avenue Monday, looking for ballistic evidence.
Tanksley said the individuals involved in the incident denied currently being in a gang, though he said that there were "gang overtones" to the incident.
