The little Indie film that could, and should, be seen

Wes Anderson's charmer Moonrise Kingdom is steadily crawling its way up from the top 20 to the top 10 at the box office, which is why I was deeply peeved that it did not open in wide release on Friday while Rock of Ages and That's My Boy did. I do not mind Rock of Ages opening as much as That's My Boy, another Adam Sandler horror show; hell, from the trailer I could just smell the Razzies.

Maybe I'm asking too much, but it would just seem fair and balanced if Moonrise Kingdom opened nationwide and could jump from number 10 at the box office to possibly number 5 or 6. Then again, I also wanted Annette Bening to win best actress for The Kids Are All Right, instead of Natalie Portman for Black Swan, because Bening is older and has been nominated more times. I guess I have always rooted for the underdog, or at least I am of the philosophy that for someone who has worked hard like Wes Anderson and may have the biggest hit of his career on his hands, it almost seems just plain logical to push aside a lowbrow Adam Sandler film.

Just because Annette Bening is older and has been nominated more doesn't mean she did a better job in her film. Not to mention the conceit of the film: lesbians are only lesbians until they meet the right man. Wes Anderson is no underdog. At this point in his career, I am fairly positive that the small release is in some capacity his doing. Word of mouth promotion is back in a big way. Here's a professional take on it. http://tiny.cc/g8s9fw And Sandler's movie? Check its box office take.
