Dorothy Spourdalakis, 50, once the owner of The Eyeglass Shop in Oak Park, has been accused of murdering her autistic teen son in their River Grove Home.

Also charged in the case is Agatha Skrodzka, the godmother of Alex Spourdalakis, 14, who was fatally stabbed last week, according to media reports. The news, which has gotten national attention, started back in March when Spourdalakis said her son was restrained and left to suffer in an area hospital.

Spourdalakis and Skrodzka, his full-time caregiver face first-degree murder charges for allegedly stabbing the teen. According to reports, the women initially tried to kill him with sleeping pills, but eventually stabbed him multiple times and slit his wrist. They then killed the family cat and attempted to kill themselves with sleeping pills. Reports from court last week detailed an alleged suicide letter from which the woman explained that Alex's emotional condition had deteriorated. Prosecutors in the case said both women signed statements admitting their roles, media reports say.

Their next court appearance is set for today, June 19.

It's unclear if Spourdalakis is still the owner of the Oak Park shop, but according to records listed online from the Illinois Secretary of State's office, she is still listed as the president.
