We're ready for Meatless Mondays in Oak Park

Oak Park likes a good symbol. We're not nuclear free for nothing.

On Monday night the Oak Park village board was expected to pass a symbolic resolution urging villagers to enjoy Meatless Mondays. It's not a law. No tickets will be issued. Becoming a vegetarian is not expected. But consciousnesses will be raised and that's the point.

The resolution comes at the urging of the village's volunteer public health board. They want us to think about the sources of our food, balance in our diet. They want local restaurants to add vegetarian options on typically slow Mondays.

We're in.

Normally, I am a supporter and proponent of volunteer commissions, but I think we need to replace those on the Public Health board. Symbolism over substance is a waste of time. The commission structure is supposed to filter the nonsense away from the staff and trustees, not add to it. If the WJ wants to take this idea and run with it, be our guest but leave the village, and by extension, the taxpayer, out of it.

Let's raise consciousness about real issues with direct and immediate need in the community. How about "Get off your fat butt and exercise Mondays" or "Stop texting while you're driving Mondays", or maybe "No heroin at McDonalds on Madison Mondays?" I will eat meat at every meal on Mondays as a protest to this asinine resolution.

You know who else liked symbols? Nazi's. Oak Park is not a symbolic leader, it is a cartoon character. No nukes, no guns...err...wait...tons of tax $ later...guns, no Patriot Act..oh our guys are listening..well..umm, no meat. Keep heralding the thrusting of lifestyle preferences, social theories and personal choices on those that don't share them. It is the good fascist thing to do.
