Veto the meningitis vaccine mandate

Opinion: Letters To The Editor

The following is a letter to Gov. Pat Quinn, resulting from a 117-0 Illinois House vote and a 52-0-6 (not voting)-1 (present) Senate vote. Both Oak Park's Senator Harmon and Rep. Lilly voted Yes.

Dear Governor Quinn:

Illinois Vaccine Awareness Coalition (IVAC) members ask you to veto HB 3190 (schools-meningococcal vaccine) mandated for sixth- and 12th-grade boys and girls for the following reasons:

1) Three meningitis vaccines' ingredients include:

a) alcohol

b) formaldehyde

c) thimerosal (49.6% mercury)

d) yeast extracts

2) Two meningitis vaccines have not been evaluated for cancer or gene mutation potential or for fertility impairment; one meningitis vaccine has not been evaluated for male fertility.

3) Two meningitis vaccines vials' stopper contains dry natural rubber latex which may cause allergic reactions in latex-sensitive individuals.

4) Three meningitis vaccines' adverse reactions include:

a) anorexia

b) brain and spinal cord inflammation

c) Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)

d) seizure

IVAC members understand that parents and legal guardians can object to this mandate based on personal religious beliefs or medical objections.

Will you veto HB 3190 — for our children's sake?

Barbara A. Mullarkey
President, IVAC

Having just visited IVAC's website to check out the links etc. for this information I read in vain for data on what PERCENTAGE of vaccinated persons suffer any of the myriad symptoms listed on the site. Not there. IVAC's list of symptoms, etc., are drawn from the inserts provided by the drug manufacturers -- what???? Why would Mullarkey trust THEM to tell the truth if she's so concerned about side effects? Where are the third party studies? FDA studies?

If the bill includes an opt-out, why in heaven's name should the Gov. veto the bill? Make the information available to parents and call it a day. What's next? Pitchforks and torches?

OMG... it's 2013 people, not the 1600's. Talk to your doctor.

Jim, um yeah...We both quoted a STAT so it would be the same, Sparkster. Why so pro-vaxxes, huh? Do you work for Astra-Zeneca or what? "I wanna be one less, one less!" Remember that shameless Gardasil ad? They targeted minorities because they probably thought they would go along like sheeple with anything but they were WRONG! TX tried to MANDATE Gardasil vaxxes. This is satanic. They are firing docs and nurses who know that this shite is poison and refuse to get them! No offense to the parent.

@Violet Aura. Are you actually Barbara Mullarkey? Have you used Violet Aura in the past or hijacked it for this thread? Not sure too many others care that Donald Rumsfeld was the CEO who pushed aspartame in the '80s. Also, Barbara has been quoted saying that FDA received 10K+ complaints about aspartame; funny that "Violet Aura" should allude to the same data.

@VA, Just an FYI that Sonia uses her real name, and that the Wednesday Journal has written a story, a few years back, about her and her husband and their four children and the autoimmunity issues of three of them. If you Google some key words, you may be able to find the article.

I don't read the comments section often enough to judge, so could someone who is more familiar with her style tell me if Violet Aura just did a parody of herself?

@Jim: I know, right? Any product by Donald Rumsfeld has to be a good one... :/ Aspartame has the most complaints to the FDA of any product out there. It is a neurotoxin, Barbara was ahead of her time, and could be behind an increase in ALS, MS, and Parkinson's.

@Sonia: How effing DARE you!!!! First of all, if you think that I believe everything I read on the Internets, you mistake me for a blooming idiot, dear. I don't even know if you have kids but if your beloved vaxxes are soooo effective, then shoot up your little kidlets and you will be protected, right? You may very well work for Merck. In any case, people do NOT get vaxxed or allow your kids to do so! This is a culling of the herd, not to mention possible microchips implanted in us!

So, Barbara Mullarkey is still at it. In the early '80s it was the artificial sweetener aspartame (better know under its brand name, Equal). Ban it because it was going to neuter mankind, or something like that. An Oak Park tradition lives on.

According to the FDA website, only one of the three meningococcal vaccines contains thimerosal. So, one of the supposed "facts" in this letter to the editor is not true. Draw your own conclusions.

Aside from the paranoia, what bothers me about the anti-vaccine crowd is that they seem to forget how truly horrible the diseases are we're protecting against. They make it sound like these vaccines are worse than the disease. Not even close.

The symptoms of meningitis are vague and often not different from a flu or a virus. Diagnosis is made with a procedure where a long needle is inserted into the spine and spinal fluid is extracted and tested. Symptoms progress rapidly with this disease and if untreated or treated late can often result in death. Children and young adults are big spreaders of this disease. Now question wether you want your child vacinated.

I was discussing the flu vaccine with my doctor on a visit earlier this year. He related a patient at the hospital in his early 60's caught the flu and died of it within 24 hours. Yes, this man had a chronic disease but a vaccine might have made the difference between life and death. I also want to say, remember when polio took thousands of our children. The polio vaccine has a lot to do with having a mother or father today who survived this epidemic thanks to the research and wide distribut

The author is a well meaning but woefully uninformed local gadfly, whose IVAC consists pretty much of herself. The website contains no information about her academic qualifications, if any. IVAC's last press release was issued in 2002. The issues raised may indeed have merit, or they may be totally frivolous. Unfortunately they require a more accomplished messenger with actual professional credentials.

I'm receptive to the argument against this and other vaccines, but I'd like to see the empirical evidence. I'm quite hesitant to be rely upon a post from the president of an organization who can't even keep their website running and ideally backing their concerns with published scientific research. Until I see the proof you have the same level of credibility as UFO watchers. My kids will continue to be vaccinated and immune to diseases that may seriously harm or kill your kids.

@ Amanda;' 'vaccines cause more problem than they they solve". Polio vaccine saved possibly millions. Some vaccines cause more problem than they solve.

Not allowing personal right and personal choice regarding vaccines is not constitutional. We must have the right to decide what drugs we will allow to be injected into our children and ourselves. Vaccines have never been proven to be safe and contain copious amounts of toxins, including mercury and aluminum. A huge rise in all these illnesses--autism, diabetes, allergies, asthma---and health officials cannot tell us why. We must educate ourselves, use exemptions if necessary

As the mother of an immune compromised child the requiring of yet another useless vaccine is the last thing we need. My once perfectly healthy son was destroyed by 6 vaccines at once. This is about $. Vaccines cause more problems than they solve.

Since many children are also being reccommended to get influenza vaccines, the amount of thimerosal from that shot coupled with this new mandated meningitis shot is concerning. There is much evidence that mercury, including thimerosal, the vaccine mercury, can induce immune and autoimmune disease. See pubmed for studies.

Allen Taloff from Naperville

Posted: June 23rd, 2013 4:52 PM

This is unacceptable, thimerosal is mercury, a neurotoxin that KILLS brain cells. Our children are not guinea pigs.

Posted: June 23rd, 2013 4:15 PM

We have had severe vaccine reactions in our family, which could have been prevented if we had been pre-screened for likelihood of such reactions. It's disgusting that someone could even think of selfishly demanding that other people's children undergo an invasive procedure. There is no excuse whatsoever for such selfishness. I would never ask others to vax to protect my children, who can no longer get vaccines.

Sorry, but being President of the Illinois Vaccine Awareness Coalition doesn't buy you any credibility in my book. Your website doesn't even work to allow me to research your credibility. It times out. Do you have a post-grad degree (ideally doctorate) in medicine? Are you board certified? If not, do you wear aluminum foil hats at all of your coalition meetings? There are insect bits in peanut butter but that doesn't keep me from eating it.

Parents, please consult with your doctor.

I would think that people would look at the risk of the vaccine against the risk of the disease process and statistics of getting this disease. Some open-mindedness is essential. The author of this article is neither. Talk with your doctor.

Dear OP/RF Community, It's letters like this that scare me to pieces. I have four children, three of whom have a primary immune disease. They are missing half their immune system and cannot mount a response to various infections. We rely on the community around us to stay immunized: this is what keeps my children healthy. PLEASE, please think carefully about ALL around you when you make decisions. Let's keep everyone IMMUNIZED and healthy.
