With four recent OPRF graduates pursuing pro baseball dreams, each week WEDNESDAY JOURNAL will be keeping readers informed of their progress. Stats are through Sunday.
Blake Whealy hit a three-run homer against Palm Beach on June 6 before sitting out five straight games for Single-A St. Lucie. He's hitting .239 with five homers and 17 RBIs.
Apparently Justin Olson is handling the transition to the bullpen just fine. After going 3-6 in 12 starts for New Britain, Olson has moved to the bullpen, where he's won three consecutive outings to even his record at 6-6. Olson got two relief wins against Norwich last week, allowing one run in 3 2/3 innings and lowering his ERA to 4.64. He now has 12 decisions in 14 appearances
Vasili Spanos had another good week for Stockton, going 8-for-22 (.364) with five extra-base hits, including a homer. He delivered a game-tying RBI triple Sunday night with two outs in the top of the ninth, although Stockton lost to Bakersfield in 12. Spanos is leading the Ports in hitting at .303, second in RBIs with 43, and tied for second in homers with seven.
Ruairi O'Connor's freshman season ended last weekend when Florida State got swept in its best-of-three Super-Regional against Florida, which advanced to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. O'Connor finished at .227 with two homers and 16 RBIs. He played in 40 of FSU's 73 games.
