Obey natural law or we suffer

A flyer being distributed by the village of Oak Park is titled, "Electricity Aggregation: The Choice is Yours," The content is clear and helpful for those of us who want to support clean, renewable sources for our electricity. It's the title that I have an issue with.

"Choice" is not a useful concept when considering our energy system and the effect it has on our climate system. We cannot "choose" whether or not to obey the laws of physics and chemistry. And those laws say that if we put more greenhouse gases, like CO2, into the atmosphere by burning coal, oil, and natural gas, our climate will continue to get warmer and warmer, until it is no longer the climate that has helped nurture civilization for thousands of years.

It's been said that the aggregation controversy in Oak Park has been a "learning experience." Hopefully, part of that learning will be to understand that, unlike many political and economic aspects of public policy, natural law does not compromise. It does not negotiate. No horse-trading.

Obey the Law or suffer the consequences.
