The OPRF baseball team passed right through the State regional playoffs with ease last week, racking up 24 runs to its opponent's three in the two games.
The three runs came from Gordon Tech in the Oak Park Regional title game and didn't do much to cause a fright in the Huskies, who annihilated the Rams 15-3 and now advance to play St. Ignatius today (Wednesday, 4 p.m.) at the Priory in the first round of the Fenwick Sectional.
Tim Dennehy (6-3) nailed down his first win of the postseason with a four-hit, 10-strikeout performance. The Texas-bound lefty walked two in five innings.
The Huskies were led offensively by Mike Cunningham (3-for-4), Matt McFolling (3-for-4) and Ryan Spierowski, who belted a homer and double for two RBIs. Cunningham racked up a total of three RBIs on a double and a triple.
The Huskies trounced Kelvyn Park 9-0 in the regional opener on May 25. Joe Froelich got the win by tossing a one-hit shutout. He struckout 11 and walked only one in five innings. Andrew Hagins capped the victory with a homer.
Both playoff victories showcased the return of Eric Lisle, who severely injured his right leg while skiing in Colorado before the start of the season. Lisle wasn't expected back all season due to the severity of his injuries?#34;a dislocated knee-cap and two ligament tears. Lisle pinch hit in both games. The senior had an infield hit in the win over Kelvyn Park and a sacrifice fly against Gordon Tech.
