Blake Whealy had three hits and scored twice in three games last week. He's hitting .252 with 14 RBIs for St. Lucie of the Florida State League.
After nine starts for Double-A New Britain, Justin Olson made his first relief appearance Friday, allowing two runs in four innings in the Rock Cats' 6-3 loss to New Hampshire. In his previous start on May 23, Olson fell to 3-5 when he gave up six runs in five innings against Trenton. With eight strikeouts last week, Olson has 49 K's in 53 1/3 innings.
Vasili Spanos hit his fifth homer of the season Thursday against High Desert of the California League. He went 7-for-25 (.280) in six games last week, with four RBIs and three runs scored. Spanos is hitting .287 and is second on Single-A Stockton with 31 RBIs.
Freshman outfielder Ruairi O'Connor grounded out as a pinch-hitter in Florida State's 18-2 loss to Georgia Tech in the semifinals of the ACC tournament Saturday. The Seminoles beat North Carolina and Wake Forest but lost twice to the Yellow Jackets in the tournament. FSU qualified for the NCAA tournament and will host a four-team regional this weekend.
Derek Schlecker made the final appearance of his sophomore season on May 25 as he allowed an unearned run in Western Michigan's 5-4 loss to Central Michigan in the Mid-American Conference tournament. Schlecker allowed a hit and a walk in 1 2/3 innings, bringing his final season ERA to 2.45. He went 5-3 with five saves and 41 strikeouts in 40 1/3 innings.
