With summer officially here, along comes the "Ultimate Guide to Family Fun," in the form of a newly launched quarterly magazine from Chicago Parent, a sister publication of WEDNESDAY JOURNAL.
Chicago Parent Going Places is a free, 196-page, glossy, full-color magazine filled with well over 500 listings of things to do with your kids this summer. It covers all of the 6-county Chicago metro area. The magazine, which has been published as an annual for the past 15 years, debuted last week in its new format. A second edition will be published in November and, starting in 2006, it will be published quarterly.
Chicago Parent has been owned by Wednesday Journal, Inc. for 15 years. It was named the best metropolitan parenting magazine in the country this year by Parenting Publications of America and judges from the University of Missouri. This was the third time the magazine was so honored. Oak Parker Susy Schultz is associate publisher and editor of both magazines. Cindy Richards, also an Oak Park resident, is senior editor of the magazines.
"Going Places has always been enormously popular with both readers and advertisers," said Dan Haley, publisher. "It has been a wonderful resource for families. So, for a number of reasons, we decided that if once a year was good, then four times a year would be better. The new version is spectacular with a bigger page size, full-color on every page, a wonderful, readable design, and the addition of a lot of fun new features. Susy and her colleagues did amazing work on a tight timetable."
Work has started on the Holiday issue and Schultz promises both more fun and more useful, detailed listings. "Our goal during this first year is to have someone from our staff visit every single attraction we list?#34;and that's more than 500 places. That's how we get the sort of detailed information a family needs before it plans a visit."While more than 75,000 copies of the magazine have been distributed over the past 10 days to some 1,000 locations across the metro area, the new magazine is already in short supply. However, Chicago Parent Going Places is also on the web at www.chicagoparent.com.
