Second baseman Blake Whealy hit his third homer of the year Sunday in Single-A St. Lucie's loss to the Daytona Cubs of the Florida State League. After going 5-for-22 (.227) in seven games last week, Whealy's season average dropped 20 points to .278. He has 10 walks and 22 strikeouts in 79 at-bats.
Justin Olson evened his record at 2-2 by pitching seven innings of one-run ball for Double-A New Britain Sunday. Olson allowed three hits while walking four and striking out five in the Rock Cats' 5-1 win over New Hampshire. He lowered his ERA to 3.33 and has 25 strikeouts in 27 innings.
After hitting safely in all seven games last week, Single-A Stockton third baseman Vasili Spanos raised his season average to .309. Spanos went 9-for-25 (.360) with four RBIs for the week. Like Whealy, Spanos has struggled with the strikeout, recording eight walks and 21 whiffs on the season.
Ruairi O'Connor didn't see any action this weekend as Florida State won 2 of 3 while visiting Virginia. The 37-14 Seminoles will play a three-game series at Maryland this weekend.
Western Michigan pitcher Derek Schlecker went 1-1 in two relief outings last week, bringing his record to 5-3 with a 2.70 ERA. The 6-5 righthander earned a win with two scoreless innings against Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne before coughing up six runs in a loss to Ohio University on Saturday. He has four saves in 15 appearances for the Broncos.
