Huskies' outstanding hurdlers set pace for strong showing

Whenever hurdlers Koren Leonard and JT Lowder compete, they are going to record excellent times and score points. The pair of Oak Park and River Forest High School junior standouts each finished fifth in a hurdles race at the Class 3A state finals, leading the Huskies to a 12th place tie (16 points) with McHenry in the team standings.

Lowder placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.33 seconds, while Leonard notched fifth at 39.66 in the 300 hurdles.

A couple of other OPRF athletes advanced to Saturday's finals and posted a top 10 finish. In the 1,600, senior Matt Vietzen finished eighth in the state b by crossing the finish line in 4:17.86. Senior Noah Kowal came in sixth in the long jump with a measurement of 14 feet, 9 inches.

In the triple jump, senior Myles Molette-Hughes was 11th (45.7.75). 

The Huskies qualified several relays and athletes for the stete finals with a dominant performance in sectional competition. OPRF cruised to the Proviso East Sectional championship, outscoring runner-up Lane Tech 198-65. Overall, the Huskies produced seven winners and multiple runners-up in the individual events, plus strong relays, at Proviso East.

OPRF also won indoor and outdoor West Suburban Conference championships this year.

Huskie volleyball on a roll

The OPRF boys volleyball team is a win away from a return trip to the state finals tournament. The Huskies, who have cruised through their three postseason matches without dropping a set, take on sectional host St. Patrick, Tuesday May 29 in Chicago. The match starts at 6 p.m.

OPRF baseball upset by Maine West

For the second straight season, the Huskies uncharacteristically fell short of winning a regional title. Maine West held on for a 3-2 win against the Huskies at the Maine East Regional. Trailing 3-0, OPRF rallied with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning; however, only four hits and three errors proved too much to overcome. Luke Fitzgerald hit a double and Nathan Diamond a triple for the Huskies.

Friars' Augustyn 7th in triple jump

Fenwick senior Matthew Augustyn jumped 43-11.5 to earn seventh place in the triple jump in the Class 3A state finals (43-11.50).

Evanston stuns Friars on diamond

The Fenwick baseball team lead Evanston 3-0, but the Wildkits rallied with two runs in the sixth inning and two in the seventh for a 4-3 victory. Akex Pup had a hit and three walks for the Friars, who finished with just four hits for the game. Fenwick starting pitcher Joe Atkins struck out six in 6.2 innings of work. 

Adam Geibel and Jake Snider knocked in two runs apiece for the Wildkits.

Fenwick softball wins regional

Winning pitcher Alyssa Stramaglia went the distance, allowing just four hits in a 1-0 win against Benet on Saturday. Stramaglia helped her own cause with the game-winning hit. The Friars' Kayley Sherwood, Cassandra Lee, Nora O'Connor and Ava Vaccaro added a hit apiece.

Fenwick (15-17) advances to the Glenbard South Sectional. The Friars will play Montini Tuesday, May 29 at 4:30 p.m.

Gutierrez 2-2 at tennis state finals

Fenwick singles player Carlos Gutierrez split four matches at the IHSA state finals. He cruised to victories over Arian Rahbar of Dunlap 6-1, 6-2 and Greg Rashid of Streator 6-2, 6-0 in the opening two rounds of play. Wauconda's Brian Hackman ended Gutierrez's run in three sets, 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-1.

The Friars' doubles team of Pierce Butler and Ryan Dunlap went 1-2 at state.

Friars' Lax meets Loyola again

The Fenwick boys lacrosse team has had the best season in program history. The team earned a 10-8 victory over St. Rita in a sectional final. Next up for the Friars is LoyolaAcademy, a perennial powerhouse team that beat Fenwick twice during the regular season.

The Chicago Catholic League rivals square off on Tuesday, May 29 at Lane Tech (7:30 p.m.)
