Do fiscal conservatives get free speech too?

Opinion: Letters To The Editor

We moved to Oak Park 42 years ago. This community was known throughout the United States for its diversity, open mind and freedom to express your opinion. It was a very tolerant community.

In the last 10 years, I've found the community closing its mind to opinion and beliefs that might not coincide with the majority of citizens. If you are not in lock-step with the liberal Democrat Party, your 1st Amendment right, "Freedom of Speech," is denied you.

Union solidarity signs, paid for and supplied by the Democrat Party, are all over the village. My husband and I purchased two yard signs saying, "Tax Payer Solidarity." Within 48 hours, both signs were stolen.

Lessons learned:

Our freedom to openly express a different opinion has been silenced!

Fiscal conservatives are not welcome.

Mary, thanks for responding but you didn't answer my question. Were you able to find a print shop in Oak Park to make the signs? I hope you are not blaming just Dems for the vacant storefronts on Madison. The economic downtown was caused by Bush. Remember how the war in Iraq was going to pay for itself with oil revenues? A trillion dollars drained from the US Treasury to cover that lie. He lied us in to an illegal war, gave tax breaks to people who didn't need them and crippled economic growth.

Have you noticed all the vacant store fronts in Oak Park? Have you noticed this is not a problem in Forest Park? I wonder why?

Is there a shop in Oak Park that will print those signs, Mary? Support your hometown businesses!

Mary, that's a startling charge you make about your right to free speech being denied. It's true that Oak Parkers cast more ballots for Dems than GOP but I can't recall any complaints being filed about campaigns or elections. I don't think it is fair to paint with such a broad brush. We've had houseplants lifted from our front porch and yet didn't blame Chauncy Gardner. Fiscal conservatives should be heard from now but I wish those folks had spoken up when Bush was running up all this debt.

Democrat Party?

Sorry to hear that your signs were stolen. That is wrong plain and simple. Please note, however, that there is no such thing as the "Democrat Party" -- it's the "Democratic Party" (members of which are "Democrats"). No need to thank me for this free advice. Consider it a public service.

True story: Someone took our Easter Bunny that was tied with rope to our porch column. Rope and all are gone. I am hoping it was some H S pranksters.

Mary, I feel bad that your signs were stolen. I have had a fair number of signs taken over the years. The First Amendment only applies to Government action, not private citizens. You are free to express yourself and so are those who disagree with you. It is sad that they chose to do so in such an dishonorable fashion. The law protects your ability to speak out, not your feelings from being hurt by being in the minority.

Mary, please tell us where we can purchase these signs? I am sure there are about 10,000 households in OP that would place this sign on their lawn!
