The District 97 board observed a minute of silence in its May 11 meeting for Zion community and two girls slain there on Mother's Day.

"I think we feel a close connection to them through our incoming superintendent Dr. Connie Collins," said board President Carolyn Newberry Schwartz. Collins currently serves as superintendent of Zion Elementary District 6.

Authorities have charged Jerry Hobbs, 34, in the May 8 stabbing murders of his daughter Laura Hobbs, 8, and her friend Krystal Tobias, 9.

"Our heartfelt sympathy and care goes out to that entire community," Newberry Schwartz said.
