The cleanup and restoration of Barrie Park may have gained a reputation for delays, but the Park District of Oak Park is confident that the playground area of the park will be open to the public beginning Saturday morning.
The district had hoped to re-open Barrie Center this weekend as well, but as of Monday, parks director Gary Balling said, "it's obvious that's not going to happen."
The district will hold an official ribbon-cutting at the park at 10 a.m. on Saturday. As part of the ceremony, Harvard Street, between Taylor and Lombard, will be closed for games and activities.
Balling said the target date for a re-opening of the entire park, which has been closed for years due to an extensive environmental cleanup, is September 10.
