Fenwick water polo
Sectional host Fenwick knocked defending state champion Lyons Township out of the playoffs with an 11-8 win Saturday. Matt Farmer (six goals) and Danny Farmer (two goals) paced the Friars.
Fenwick meets Homewood-Flossmoor on Friday (5:45 p.m.) in the state quarterfinals.
The Fenwick girls team also claimed its home sectional championship via an impressive 10-2 rout of LT.
OPRF girls water polo
The Huskies' superb season came to an end with an 8-7 loss to York in sectional competition. Katie Appell (two goals, four kickouts), Anna Vogel (two goals, two steals) and Zoe Erickson (four saves) led OPRF, which finished 23-7.
OPRF boys track
The Huskies took third place (90 points) at the West Suburban (Silver) Conference championship.
Tariq Taylor won the 110 (11.02) and Jamal Baggett took first in the 200 (22.66). In the triple jump, Samora Nesbitt (43-10) also garnered top honors for the Huskies.
OPRF won both the 400 relay (42.63) and 800 relay (1:29.73).
OPRF took two games from Proviso West, both by the score of 10-0, to secure a share of the West Suburban (Silver) Conference championship. The Huskies can claim the league title outright with one more victory against the Panthers this week.
Charlie Fenwick smacked the game-winning RBI in the Huskies' 5-4 win in eight innings over Downers Grove North.
The Huskies swept a doubleheader, 6-0 and 3-2, from visiting Evanston on Saturday. Emma Baldwin tossed a four-hitter en route to a complete game victory and Mariah Weinand went 2-for-2 with a double and RBI in the opener. Annelise Ryan provided the game-winning hit, and Libby Foster finished 2-for-4 in the nightcap.
The Friars lost 8-6 against Sandburg to split four games last week. Marisa Wakely and Jess Mrozek had two hits apiece for Fenwick (14-13, 7-9 East Suburban Catholic Conference).
The Friars picked up a 7-0 win against Nazareth and a 4-3 victory in eight innings against Benet. Val Perrelli went the distance and allowed three hits, while Jess Mrozek went 2-for-4 with a homer against the Roadrunners. Perrelli's game-winning hit put away Benet. Mrozek worked all eight frames for the win, while Ashley Parenti (2-for-3) and Marisa Wakely (2-for-4) chipped in offensively against the Redwings.
Fenwick boys tennis
The Friars finished as runner-up (29 points) at the Catholic League championships over the weekend. St. Ignatius and Loyola tied for top honors with 37 points apiece.
Gustafson nabs 'Triple Threat' award
OPRF basketball player Alex Gustafson recently earned the "Triple Threat" Award at the Hoops Classic West Side vs. South Side All-Star game at the University of Chicago. The prestigious award was given to the top student-athlete with high academic and quality civic engagement.
In the game, Gustafson canned a three-pointer along with posting seven rebounds and a game-high four steals.
McGuire makes USA water polo selection camp
Molly McGuire, a seventh-grader at Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School, has been selected to attend the USA Water Polo Women's 8th grade & under National Teams Selection camp in California over Memorial Day weekend.
Wolfpack wins in Wisconsin
The Wolfpack sixth-grade boys basketball team, an Oak Park and River Forest-based youth hoops squad, won a tournament in Kenosha, Wis., over the weekend.
