Emmanuel Jenkins, son of Cherie Hopkins (left), and Sophie Maynard, daughter of Tina Mingo (right), took part in Take Your Child to Work Day at Rush Hospital in Chicago on April 28. Cherie and Tina are nurses in the Labor and Delivery Department, and their kids got what they were hoping to see?#34;the birth of babies. In fact, they witnessed twins, said Mingo.
"They were thrilled, absolutely thrilled," Mingo said. "Daddy's desk job now seems really boring." Don Maynard is an Oak Park architect.
Emmanuel and Sophie also got tours of the nurseries, including the Intensive Care nursery. It was a real education, said Mingo, who has worked at Rush for the past six years. She read the editorials by people who said kids should be in school instead of the workplace, but Mingo disagrees. "They had a pretty good experience," she said. And the kids were able to take their experiences back to relate to classmates. Emmanuel is a fourth-grader at Longfellow, while Sophie is in fifth grade at Whittier.
