April 6 marks the demise of the Lake and Forest snow mountain and the thrilling conclusion of the Big Melt Contest from OakPark.com.

For those who may have missed it, Oak Park witnessed a blizzard of epic proportions on Feb. 1. Oak Park's Public Works crews quickly turned the vacant lot at the corner of Lake and Forest into a dumping ground for the excess snow.

At the suggestion of a devoted reader, OakPark.com asked readers to make a prediction on when the "Oak Park Alps" would completely melt. Readers had until Feb. 18 to make a prediction on OakPark.com/BigMelt.

Wednesday Journal and OakPark.com are pleased to announce that Laura Stefanic is the winner of the Big Melt Contest with the closest Facebook-verified prediction of April 5. Stefanic will receive a $100 gift certificate, courtesy of our friends in Downtown Oak Park. This prize is redeemable at 75 shops, restaurants and, of course, the Lake Theatre.

Wednesday Journal and OakPark.com would like to thank everyone who participated in the Big Melt Contest. Look out for more contests from OakPark.com with chances to win exciting, local prizes.

The EXISTING pike of snow will melt by March 15...Any snow that falls on the EXISTING pile, will hide the evidence of the melt...so I trust Dan H. will be out there every night at midnight to check if the existing pile has gone before or after midnight and to measure any new snow which may have fallen... I should get the prize just for being so concise...LoL

June 10, 2011. Unpiled snow stayed on the ground for 42 days after the Jan 26-27, 1967 storm so the huge piles will be with us for a while!

Vincent Jackson

Posted: February 12th, 2011 3:10 PM

Point of reference: does the big melt have to be naturally occuring? My worry is that someone with access to a weather machine would totally rig this contest to win the $100 prize, and I don't think that is fair.

I have a better idea. How about a contest guessing when the Sertus development project begins construction at this site? It can be called the Big Wait Contest. The one who guesses the closest year wins a free breakfast at The Original Pancake House in Forest Park.

I have a better idea. Why not a contest guessing the date when the glacier-paced Sertus development project will start construction. The closest year wins.

Wow, I hope someone thought more about where this water is gonna go than they did about the best strategy to clear the streets in the first place. There are piles elsewhere, too, which are going to flood streets, houses, and businesses. Every time it snows, the surrounding communities do a great job of clearing the streets and sidewalks. In Oak Park, they just push around the snow until homeowners remove it. Further, this was unique & should have been handled differently.

Fun contest! We're due for a warm-up this weekend. Should we be concerned that most of the Village's storm drains are likely covered over and blocked with packed snow and ice? I'm wondering if the streets and alleys are going to turn into a huge mess and if the weather changes again; we'll have some severe icing to deal with. Does Public Works have any plan in place for the "big melt"?
