I've had the privilege of knowing John Hedges for well over two decades. Our association dates back to when, as executive director, John directed the park district operations and I served as a park commissioner.
I knew then, as I know today, of John's honesty and high ethical standards, his steadfast commitment to quality public service and his passion for and devotion to Oak Park and her residents.
Our park district days were not always easy ones. Our work together (along with the efforts of my fellow commissioners) included at times some contentious negotiations with the village. Those efforts resulted in the signing and implementation of the first Intergovernmental Agreement that merged the park district and the Village Recreation Department's operations. That cooperative merger of governmental agencies served as a foundation that delivered a substantial improvement in services and significant taxpayer savings.
Throughout those difficult negotiations, while managing the many responsibilities and demands that directing a municipal operation in Oak Park present, John worked to build consensus from those of differing opinions and was often recognized as the most reasoned and calm influence in the room.
With the same influence and devotion to those things that make Oak Park a special place to live, I've watched closely as he has skillfully managed his most recent civic responsibilities as a village trustee.
John recently wrote: "The coming years will be challenging. I want to bring the various folks involved in local development to meet these challenges with one voice for a strong Oak Park"
These are not just empty words and shallow campaign promises. I'm eager to watch Oak Park grow and prosper under John's skillful leadership.
It's a very clear choice: John Hedges for Oak Park Village President.
