I'm writing in support of John Hedges for village president because he's exactly the kind of dedicated volunteer public servant who has been successful at making Oak Park the wonderful community it is today.
As a former president of the District 97 school board, I had the pleasure of working with John when he was the executive director of the Park District of Oak Park and have observed him working through complex decisions as a member of the Village Board of Trustees. I know that his deep experience in the community, as someone who has had both executive management and board policy-making experience, enable him to be uniquely qualified for the president's role.
The president of the village board is the first among equals but is expected to lead and represent Oak Park to a wider regional and state community. John has the experience to step in and lead on day one.
He is also a great supporter of education, having won the Oak Park Educational Foundation's Staszak Award, and recently pushed for local funding of the Collaboration for Early Childhood.
In addition to his volunteer experience on the village board and in many other local activities, John was also interim village manager. While on the current village board, I appreciate his attention to making village services run more efficiently at less cost, his support for education, and his willingness to collaborate with others.
We have a rare opportunity to elect someone so well prepared to lead us forward.
