I am somewhat puzzled by the recent passage of a residential sprinkler ordinance in River Forest [Residential sprinklers now required in RF, Wednesday Journal, March 15]. Not that I’m necessarily against the idea, but is this really the public safety issue in the village? My guess is that the River Forest Fire Department spends more of their time responding to motor vehicle accidents at intersections which have no traffic signs for either direction (aka “unprotected corners”), than they do fighting residential structure fires.

In my opinion, the River Forest board could make a much larger impact on public safety by eliminating the numerous “unprotected corners” in the village. A reduction in the number of motor vehicle accidents will not only be beneficial to the public, but also to the police and fire personnel who put themselves at risk everytime they respond to an incident.
