Vaile Scott, 87, formerly of Oak Park and River Forest, died on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013 in Valparaiso, Ind. He and his wife, Mary, lived here prior to moving to Valparaiso and Sarasota, Fla. All six of the Scott children went to Oak Park and River Forest High School.
Mr. Scott served on the Oak Park Plan Commission during the 1960s and helped monitor housing and economic issues for the village board. The commission generated public support for Oak Park's landmark Fair Housing Ordinance which was approved by the village in 1968. He also served as a volunteer with the Village Manager Association, taking advantage of his experience as a community organizer when he lived on the Southwest Side of Chicago. He was proud to be president of the VMA when Sara Bode was elected as Oak Park's village president in 1981, the first woman to hold that office.
He was one of the founders of the Catholic Adult Education Centers, a lay-based organization begun by the Archdiocese of Chicago. One of the 13 centers was located at St. Edmund Church in Oak Park. More recently he served as president of the National Center for the Laity, which is headquartered in Chicago.
Mr. Scott's day job in recent years was running a computer services company in partnership with other members of the Scott family. He served in the Tank Corps in Germany in World War II, but in civilian life he became an accomplished sailor, initially with the Columbia Yacht Club in Chicago and later at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron in Florida.
With the passing of Vaile Scott and of John Philbin, Oak Park has lost two more people who provided positive leadership during very challenging times. The family brought Vaile Scott back home for a visitation at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home in Oak Park and a farewell Mass at Old St. Patrick's church in Chicago on April 4.
