Oak Park village trustees approved a $12,000 budget request Tuesday for the Village of Oak Park Area Arts Council's Off the Wall program.

The group will use the funds for the installation of a mural this summer at the School of Rock, a business that offers music lessons for kids, at 219 Lake Street.

The Off the Wall program offers work to teens 16 to 19, painting murals in Oak Park.

"They also work with a professional master artist to design, create and install mosaic/bricolage murals throughout the village," according to a letter from the Oak Park Area Arts Council requesting the funds from the village.

"We are planning to take on two projects for this summer. The School of Rock request brings the number to three projects, and that is doable with excellent planning and enough funding."

The Off the Wall program has been in place since 2005.

Is everything "Art"?

Over the past five years or so this entire, stately and beautiful village has already been turned into what looks like a child's art easel. Folks, there is a reason other villages and towns don't do this -- it's absolutely HIDEOUS. Should be reserved for warehouses facing the highways in abandoned communities. Ugh. And it *never* stops! Our past village manager's big brainchild spreading like a virus. Stop the madness!!!!!

Another reason this town stinks

What a waste of $. Why can't the kids raise the $ themselves? Crowd source? Why tax dollars?

We are so excited and very appreciative about being the recipient of this art project. As someone whose father and sister have chosen to make their living as fine artists, it was important to me to reflect our family's love of art at the School of Rock. Additionally, we are working with area business owners and community members to help make the east side of Oak Park a vibrant place to live, work and play. This project is a wonderful addition to the community. Thank you!
