Julie MacCarthy is a beacon of positive energy. She is also a skilled educator who is able to find and focus on the essence of immediate challenges and obstacles at hand. Julie has a fine sense of empathy, understanding not only the demands of those at the top but the needs of those who are less advantaged as well. She is an imaginative problem-solver and committed to advancing educational reforms as well as juggling the burdensome demands of budget constraints.
I have known Julie for over a dozen years, as my immediate supervisor in an arts organization that served Chicago Public Schools. Throughout her tenure at this organization we could faithfully rely on her integrity and knowledge not only as an ally but as an advocate, helping contend with and manage problems that inevitably came up in the course of delivering programs. Julie was always an informed and insightful observer of the schools where we were working. She understood the intricacies and dynamics of the system and had a fundamental concern not only for the well-being of us artists but also for the relationships that we developed with the students as well as the administrators.
Julie always has her eyes open and has always been open to new ideas. She is a good listener, a team builder and collaborator and she will be a welcome addition to the District 200 school board.
