We felt bad for the guys driving the plows down our streets in the middle of one more snowy night, for the men pulling our garbage cans out of the deep drifts to empty them, for the fellows trying to hold our hubcaps on with some hot asphalt fill on our pockmarked streets.
But it was the explosion in the number of water main breaks across Oak Park this winter that really got our attention. You're in the cold and the wind. You're in the snow. In the dark. And then you're in the ice cold running water after the main breaks, trying to find the fix for the huge leak.
Now that sounds grim.
So to our public works crews, and the men contracted to haul garbage and recycling, we offer our thanks and our admiration. It has been long hours in miserable conditions — weekends and holidays, too. But, theoretically, spring is here. At last.
