Home invader forces family into basement, steals $2,000

Two men in black ski masks forced their way into a home on the 900 block of Mapleton Avenue March 16 at approximately 4:50 p.m. The pair reportedly entered the victim's home after attacking the owner's mother as she exited the back door to walk the dog. The perpetrators forced the family into the basement, threatening to strike one of the family members, then made off with an estimated $2,000.


At 18 Chicago Ave. on March 15, someone removed a black bag containing gold jewelry from a purse on the passenger seat of a 1991 Buick Le Sabre. Estimated loss was $3,275.

? March 15, between 9 a.m. and noon, someone cut the wires and removed a stained glass light fixture from the front porch of a house on the 600 block of North Oak Park Avenue. The loss is estimated at $1,000.

? Between 10:45 and 11:45 a.m., March 16, someone took a $5,000 platinum/diamond ring from the top of a desk at Holmes School.

Residential burglary

A residential burglary was reported March 15 between 8:30 a.m. and noon on the 300 block of South East Avenue. The front door was pried open to gain entry. Among the items reported missing were two video cameras, three watches and a leather coat. The total loss is estimated at $1,905.

? Between 12:30 and 2:40 p.m., March 17, on the 200 block of North Austin Boulevard, someone broke the kitchen window, gained access, and made off with a 20-inch TV. Loss is estimated at $380.

? Someone pried open the front door of a condo on the 100 block of North Euclid Avenue and, after ransacking the bedroom, took a laptop computer, a PlayStation, a digital camera, and a printer for an estimated loss of $2,600.

Burglary to auto

An unlocked 1992 Ford van, parked in the 800 block of Clarence was reported burglarized on March 10. Reported stolen were assorted drills and saws, worth $3,098.

? At the Holley Court parking garage, 1125 Ontario, on March 16, between 11:15 a.m. and 3 p.m., someone entered an unlocked Honda Accord and removed $450 in cash.

Retail theft

A female juvenile from Chicago was arrested March 16 at 8:44 p.m. on the 1100 block of Ontario St. after being identified as the person who took eight DVDs from a display rack and left the store without paying.

Aggravated assault

At approximately 5:15 p.m., March 17, a man described as 40-50 years old was observed poking a sharp object into the front tire of a parked 2000 Honda Accord. When the victim confronted him, the perpetrator tried to stab the victim with the object.


A 43-year-old woman from Forest Park was arrested March 17, at approximately 1:30 for allegedly attempting to cash a stolen check for $695.93 at Great American Realty, 1147 Madison St.

These items were taken from the Oak Park Police Department incident reports, March 10 through March 17. Not all incidents that occurred are listed. Anyone named in reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated.
